Im Grunde geht es um den Bedarf und die Schaffung von RAUM
— als Terrain für die aus den unterschiedlichsten Gründen
entstehende Notwendigkeit, sich dem Diktat von "wirtschaftlicher
Rentabilität" zu entziehen und abseits fortschreitender
gesellschaftlicher Normalisierungsprozesse und Hierarchien zu
leben, zu arbeiten, oder soziale und kulturelle Netzwerke aufzubauen.
Politischer Widerstand erhebt in einer Demokratie–so
sie tatsächlich gelebt werden soll/darf–den
Anspruch auf die notwendigen Räume und Strukturen zu dessen
Artikulation, und um konstruktive Alternativen andenken und
zumindest im Experiment umsetzen zu können... MORE

A Paper House
A collaborative
project by Jeanne van Heeswijk/Rolf
Engelen/Siebe Thissen/Frans
Vermeer/Innbetween, A Paper House
began as a collage of documents, posters, pictures and photographs
relating to old and more contemporary groupings, movements and
individuals who squat in Rotterdam.
With recent interest in the Paper House by the Taipei Biennial 2004 “Do you believe in reality?”,
the idea of A Paper House has been reworked to travel to different
international cities physically collecting stories and material
from local freespaces in an attempt
to stimulate greater public awareness and discussion of these
places. A central project in the freibesetzt
exhibition, the Paper House installation will visit the Kunsthalle Exnergasse in the WUK with the aim
to collect the diverse freespace stories
of Vienna. MORE

The Ernst
Kirchweger Haus (EKH) in Vienna, Austria,
was squatted in 1990 to become an internationalist, anti-fascist,
self-run space. The EKH defines itself as a free zone for
cultural, political and artistic activities and houses an
autonomous living space for 30 people and numerous political
as well as cultural initiatives and groups. Since the 20th
of October 2004 it has been known that the former owner, the
Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ), has sold the building
for much less than its worth to speculators from the extreme
right-wing. In the last months, the housing management under
a Christian Machowetz, has taken official (and often terrorizing) actions to
have this internationally important autonomous run center
empty by 30th of June 2005. NOW... MORE

May 11-18, 2005
Vienna – We are some people from Vienna, who are really
fucked up with the situation here. The right winged government
of Austria
has established their repressive power for 5 years now. In
May 2005, they celebrate the anniversary of 50 years of the
so-called state treaty (sovereignty of Austria,
retreat of allied “occupation troops”) and 10
years of EU membership. Apart from cutting social systems,
introducing racist laws and encouraging a xenophobic mentality
which lead to the murder of several people, they tried (and
succeeded) to make life much harder for everyone who raises
his/her voice against injustice. Political and social institutions
are highly endangered, many projects
depending on public subsidies faced a total cut of their financial
contribution. Migrants newspaper and advisory boards had to close as
well as a progressive netculture
institute. Women advisory boards and alternative cultural
initiatives are struggling. Also those not dependent on subventions
are threatened by repression and economic “compulsions”,
particularly the only squat (EKH) in Austria
has been sold by the communist party to some extreme right-wing
speculator... We know that these deteriorations are taking
place all over Europe, everywhere we hear about the repression and
destruction of progressive movements and infrastructure. Its
another time to unite and fight !!!!!!!!
